The route for the Choquequirao Trek is a beautiful hike that plunges down into the Apurimac Canyon and then up again to Marampata viewpoint, close to the fascinating Choquequirao.
It offers a beautiful view of the mythical mountain Padreyoc, of the deep canyon and of the river Apurímac, meaning “speaking river”. We will descend towards the canyon’s interior named Chiquisca (1930m/6332f), which is also a campsite. From there we will descend to La Playa Rosalina (1550m/5085f) and then we will continue heading towards Marampata (2850m/9350f). From here we’ll have a beautiful view of the archeological complex of Choquequirao (3033m/9951f).
We will leave from Cusco or Abancay in the south of Perú, to reach the village Cachora (2850m/9350f). Here we can hire horsemen and mules that will carry all the camping equipment during the expedition. The trek continues downhill towards the pass of Capuliyoc (2800m/9186f). The route goes downhill in zig-zag to Cocamasana. We will take some time to rest in Cocamasana then hike downhill gaian in a zig-zag fashion to Chikiska.
The day continues downhill in a zig-zag fashion until La Playa Rosalina. From there we cross the bridge and we begin to hike uphill going back and forth up the mountain. After two hours we will reach Santa Rosa Baja and rest for a little while. Afterwards we will continue uphill in zig-zag for two hours until we reach Maranpata. From here the way is flatter going towards Choquequirao. Once we reach Choquequirao, we will have lunch and visit the site.
From Choquequirao the hike goes downhill in a zig-zag manner towards Maranpata. Passing the Apurimac River we will hike uphill in zig-zag to Chikiska where we will have lunch. From there the hike goes uphill to Cocamasana, where our camp will be set up.
We will hike downhill from Cocamasana to the Mirador de Capulyoc. From there the route is relatively flat with minimal hiking uphill to Cachora. From Cachora we will take a bus back to Cusco.
